Emily Duke: Industry and Nature
Emily Duke is a young ceramicist. She is known for combining elements of both architecture and nature into her works. Her material is also both familiar, yet unnatural in a sense of reality. She uses slab-built terra cotta clay and uses tension and weight to combine her pieces. She draws inspiration from construction sights, bridges, buildings, etc for structure, color, and texture. This inspiration more specifically came from her hometown in Detroit. Her work gives her a power in space and time and allows her imagination to take a different turn on concrete details of everyday life.
