Sarah Gross
Sarah Gross, a ceramist from Kansas, was named an emerging artist in 2010 for her intricate and unique pieces. She is fascinated with the duality of the screen. Each of her pieces play with the ideas of matter and space created with the screens which create an architectural barrier, distiller, and filter. Through the space and matter, she deals with the themes of isolation and inclusion. "Constructing and deconstructing, I push the material to its limits, removing as much clay as I can while retaining structural integrity. I am gratified by the transparency of the screen juxtaposed with the mass that has been cut away." Gross accomplishes her pieces by creating a lacy pattern by cutting out a single quatrefoil or trefoil. Left with many tiles, she places them around the spaces she created by removing them.
